What Is a Horizontal Multistage Centrifugal Pump?
|
Cross-section of a horizontal multistage pump: multiple impeller stages increase pressure step by step. |
A horizontal multistage centrifugal pump is a centrifugal pump that uses two or more impellers mounted in series on the same shaft. Each impeller, together with its guide vane (diffuser), forms one "stage." As the liquid flows from the suction inlet through each stage in sequence, its pressure is increased incrementally. The more stages a pump has, the higher the discharge head it can produce. Unlike a vertical multistage pump, the horizontal configuration places the shaft parallel to the ground. This layout offers excellent bearing support, easy access to the mechanical seal and bearings for maintenance, and a stable baseplate that reduces vibration during long-running, heavy-duty operation. The VSM series adopts a ring-section (segmental) structure: each stage casing is clamped between the suction and discharge covers by through-bolts. This design allows the number of stages to be adjusted precisely to match the required duty point, ensuring the pump operates near its best-efficiency point and minimizes energy waste. |
How the VSM Multistage Pump Works, Step by Step
Step 1 - Suction: Liquid enters the suction branch and flows into the first-stage impeller eye.
Step 2 - First pressurization: The rotating impeller adds kinetic energy to the liquid; the guide vane converts this velocity energy into pressure.
Step 3 - Series staging: The liquid passes into the next impeller stage, where pressure is raised again. This repeats through every stage.
Step 4 - Discharge: After the final stage, the fully pressurized liquid exits through the discharge branch at the required high pressure.
Step 5 - Shaft sealing: A cartridge mechanical seal prevents leakage along the shaft without requiring external cooling water.

Detailed Application Notes
Boiler feed water service: In boiler houses, the multistage pump delivers deaerated feed water against high boiler pressure. The VSM hot-water variant handles feed water up to 150 C, and the multi-stage design provides stable pressure even under fluctuating load. For medium- and high-pressure boilers, a dedicated boiler feed pump (DG series) is also available.
Reverse osmosis (RO) feed: RO membranes require a stable high inlet pressure. The VSM pump with SS316L or duplex 2205 wetted parts resists corrosion from permeate and concentrate, and the steady flow protects membrane life. A variable-frequency drive (VFD) is often paired for energy saving.
High-rise pressure boosting: For buildings above 50 meters, a single-stage pump cannot provide enough pressure. The VSM horizontal multistage pump, often installed in a duty-standby booster set, delivers consistent pressure to upper floors while keeping noise and vibration low.
